Storyline
Elise (Angelina Jolie) sits next to an American tourist, Frank (Johnny Depp), on a train going to Venice. She has chosen him as a decoy, making believe that he is her lover who is wanted for police. Not only will they need to evade the police, but also the mobster whose money her lover stole.

Elise (Angelina Jolie) randomly sits next to an American tourist, Frank (Johnny Depp), on a Venice-bound train. The police have been following Elise for over two years waiting for her to contact her lover, Alexander Pierce, who embezzled over $2 Billion from a mobster. The British Economic Police want to collect its share (taxes) of over $775 Million to be paid on this money. Frank, a math teacher, and Elise must evade the police, and also the mobster who's money was stolen. The storyline is not complicated; the mobsters money man steals a large amount of his money, and he is now on the run for his life, plus the police want him too. The police don't know what he looks like, so they need Elise to identify him. There is a story twist at the end. This is a remake of a French Film, Anthony Zimmer.

Elise( Angelina Jolie) is an Interpol Agent who had an affair with Alexander Pierce, a guy who stole money from British Mafia, Schwartz and also chased by the Police because they need to collect their share in taxes. Elise has been followed by her fellow agents for quite some time since Alexander was missing and was believed to have undergone a plastic surgery. The movie starts with Elise going to her usual cafe. A letter was delivered to her from Pierce by a courier. Having thought that the courier might be Pierce who had undergone plastic surgery, the Interpol Agents arrested the courier which proved to be wrong later on. The letter, which Elise burnt afterward, contained Pierce's instruction that she should ride a train to Venice and find a guy who has the same built as him and make them believe it was him. Elise boarded the train and randomly sat across Frank( Johnny Depp). She asked him to ask her to dinner. While dining, her fellow Interpol Agents took a picture of Frank and sent it to the headquarters. Inspector John, who leads the investigation, prints out a black and white copy and sent it to several agents to capture Frank when the train stops at the station believing Frank to be Alexander Pierce. He also gave a copy to one agent to check for an identity match. Luckily for Frank, there was a match. Apparently, Frank is a Professor in Math in Wisconsin who lost his wife in a car accident three years ago and that he was just a plain tourist who was mending a broken heart. The mission to capture him was then cancelled, however, one of the agents in the headquarters is connected with the Mafia and called up Schwartz, telling him that he knows the new face of Alexander Pierce. Schwartz then goes to Venice to hunt Frank. When Frank got off the train, he was a little bit lost but was surprised when Elise called him to board the boat she's in. What surprised him more was when Elise checked in a hotel and allowed her to stay with him. They went out to dinner and Elise told Frank a little about her relationship with Alexander. When they got back to the hotel, Elise went to the veranda to catch some fresh air and saw one of her colleagues keeping an eye. She then kissed Frank and the Mafia saw them. They retired for the night with Elise sleeping inside the room and Frank sleeping on the sofa in his pajamas. Frank began to dream about kissing Elise but was awakened by the waiter who had brought his breakfast as requested by Elise. When the waiter got out of the room, the Mafia walked in an started to chase Frank. The chase finally got Frank caught by the Venetian Police thinking that he was a lunatic because he jumped off from a building and pushed a Venetian Police into the canal. The head of the Venetian Police soon freed him telling him that his life is in danger because the Mafia is after him because of his mistaken identity. However, the Venetian Police sold him out to the Mafia. Again, by luck, Frank was rescued by Elise. Elise sent him off to the airport and gave him a bag containing all he need and advised him to go back to America. Elise took off even before Frank could tell her that he love her. Elise went to the Interpol Headquarters and told Inspector John that she would be handing over Alexander to him that night since she would be meeting him a the ball. That night, Elise and the Interpol agents went to the ball to do an entrapment operation. Elise was given another letter from Pierce and before she could read it, Frank appeared and asked her to dance. Since everyone was dancing in the middle, she was obliged to dance with him as well. Elise explained to him that he was just a fall guy telling him, "What do you think? My heart stopped when I saw you on the train?" Frank was stupefied by the revelation that he was all part of the plan and Elise left him there. Before he could even get a chance to go after her, he was captured by her colleagues to e put to safety. Elise went to the place where she was supposed to meet Pierce where she was followed by her colleagues and the Mafia unknown to them. She went on in the house and so did the mafia. Schwartz asked her where's the vault that Pierce kept his money. Elise said she didn't know.Schwartz was beginning to become violent. Agents were asking permission to shoot the Mafia to save Elise but John don't want to give it because he knows that Pierce won't show himself if that happens. He said he knows that Pierce won't let Elise die. Meanwhile, the detained Frank picked the lock of his cuffs to save Elise. He got there just in time when Elise was about to give her second shot to unlock the vault. He posed himself as Alexander Pierce and even changed his accent from American to British since Pierce was a British guy. Elise could not do anything but to mouth to Frank that she love him when he was about to try and open the vault. All the Mafia guns were now aimed at the couple and then suddenly the Chief of the Interpol busted in the van where Inspector John was and gave command to shoot at the Mafia to save the couple. The agents shot at the Mafia and everything was over. Inspector John and the chief walked in the room where the couple was and the chief told Elise that her suspension was lifted but she was terminated. She thanked him for that and her colleagues temporarily left them because some of the agents caught a guy whom they think was Alexander Pierce. Frank asked Elise, "So you love me?" Elise replied that she still love Alexander. Frank then said, "Perhaps I can help you decide." and the he opened the vault. Elise was astounded since she never imagined that the fall guy she chose was actually Alexander Pierce himself. They took all the money in the vault and left a check issued to the Interpol so that they would get their share of tax. In the end, Elise asked Alexander/Frank, "So for $7 million, that's the face you chose?" Alexander/Frank asked if she didnt like it. Elise replied that would do.... The end

Did You Know?
Trivia
The project went through a number of directorial changes. Originally the film was set with Lasse Hallström but he left over scheduling conflicts. Then Bharat Nalluri came on but left after the project had more difficulties. Then, when Angelina Jolie came on, so did Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck but he left over "creative differences", along with Sam Worthington. But after many names were mooted, including Alfonso Cuarón, Donnersmarck returned.
